Abstract

Motor vehicles have become a necessity in everyday life, and the number of end-of-life tires is constantly increasing significantly. Pyrolysis is a particularly suitable method of energy recovery of waste tires, which at the same time can effectively separate primarily carbon black derived carbon from the rubber. Carbon black is a carbon material close to pure form combustion products derived from hydrocarbon or biomass products. Carbon black is the type of filler most used in the manufacture of tire compounds. The presented paper is focused on the effect of new type of alternative carbon-based filler, which is derived from the pyrolysis of waste car tires, on selected important properties of rubber compound. The research compares alternative carbon-based filler with conventional filler - carbon black specifically carbon black N 339. The effect of alternative carbon-based filler on rheological properties and mechanical properties in rubber compound was studied. For a better understanding of the properties of rubber and the mechanism of reinforcement, the relationship between the basic parameters of the fillers, such as specific surface area and surface activity, and their stiffening effect in the elastomeric matrix was investigated. For this purpose, the Payne effect using the Rubber-Process-Analyzer (RPA) was studied, which allows testing the strength of the filler network and the filler-polymer interactions in the raw rubber compound as well as in the vulcanizate in a wide range of shear amplitudes. The findings of this research resulted in the development of a new type of elastomeric material with the replacement of the conventional filler with the studied alternative carbon-based filler can significantly reduce the price of rubber products, which would further promote the recycling of waste tires and will contribute to the sustainability of production.
