Abstract

This article presents the concept of a modular system designed for the online monitoring of beam deflection under controlled loading conditions. The system comprises a series of sensors for measuring load positioning, acting force and distance. The data are processed and analysed in LabVIEW, where they are visualised as a digital shadow. This feature enables the development of a digital twin through expandable communication. The system also includes features for setting up alerts and alarms, as well as for archiving data. Online monitoring enables the early detection of potential structural issues, thereby improving safety and reducing construction, design, repair, and reconstruction costs. The design is flexible enough to be customised to meet the specific requirements of different beam materials and designs. This approach provides a tool for proactive maintenance, extending the lifespan of constructions by providing continuous and reliable deflection monitoring. This system is particularly well-suited to testing new construction materials and enhancing the safety and integrity of engineering structures.
