Energy Optimal Control Strategies for AC Motors in Train Applications

Abstract


The driving strategy of an electric traction vehicle significantly influences energy consumption. This paper focuses on the application of energy-saving control strategies to the movement of a suburban train. The design of these control strategies requires an understanding of passive resistances to train movement and the average route gradient. The control procedure system is implemented for AC motors, taking into account electrical and mechanical losses. The dynamical system for optimizing AC drives consists of four differential equations, and the Euler-Lagrange optimization procedure is employed. Analytical and numerical results are presented using Matlab software, including speed and position profiles for AC drives.
