Abstract

This paper focuses on the development of models of behaviour of selected polymer topcoats with an aim to use the latter in application simulations of surface degradation. The research involves the development of a scaling system that comprises surface parameters and properties of individual polymer coatings, by using selected physical, chemical and mechanical properties of polymer topcoats and the external environment. Those selected properties are following: temperature and humidity of the external environment, the pH of the polymer coating, the composition of the polymer coating determined by optical microscopy and IR spectra, and the contact wetting angle of the polymer coating. The outputs from application modelling of the polymer coating behaviour based on the aforementioned scaling of the surface parameters will enable the user to find a suitable way of possible slowing down the degradation of the polymer surface, thereby ensuring its longer lifetime. The results of the research can be used in the interiors of historic passenger cars, specifically during the renovation of topcoats.
