Abstract
Black powder shooting is currently experiencing a surprising renaissance. In Poland, such interest is undoubtedly related to the liberality of regulations on the possession of such firearms and their replicas manufactured before 1885.
The fascination with this type of weapon, however, has not been properly related to the dissemination of the principles of operational safety. This is evident in shooting ranges, where users often forget that black powder is an extremely unstable substance, produces a lot of carbon deposits when burned, and fired bullets leave a lot of lead sediment in the weapon.
Black powder weapons are therefore subject to all sorts of dangerous influences. This translates into limitations in service life and the total number of missiles fired.
According to the authors, the area presented above requires research. It is necessary to establish ways of safe exploitation of black powder weapons. It is no less important to set a path for estimating its technical condition and determining the level of its wear. One of the key aspects will then be to determine the impact of the resulting sediments on the safe use of weapons.
On the example of research on a replica of the Remington 1858 New Army .44 revolver, the problem of the selection of measuring devices was solved and conclusions of a final nature were drawn.
